Environmental Initiatives Program Manager
THE POSITION
This is a full-time, exempt position with the Hamline Midway Coalition (HMC). The role primarily involves weekday daytime hours but requires some evenings and weekends. Compensation range is $53,000- $58,000/year depending on experience, and includes 240 hours of accrued PTO annually, ten federal holidays (plus no scheduled workdays between Christmas and New Year’s), and a monthly healthcare stipend.
The Environmental Initiatives Program Manager reports to the Executive Director and will support HMC’s mission, our environmental initiatives, and specifically our air quality monitoring project by managing project sites, leading public events, coordinating community organizing efforts, and facilitating team meetings. The position is pivotal in engaging the Hamline Midway community around environmental initiatives and fostering meaningful participation. This is a grant funded position that will last through June of 2027. Job share possible.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Hamline Midway Coalition (HMC) is an action oriented, neighborhood-based community engagement organization that:
Supports resident-led initiatives related to environmental sustainability, transportation, economic development, housing, and neighborhood relations.
Coordinates community participation in public policy decision-making and represents the interests of the neighborhood on a broad range of city and county governance issues.
Provides high-quality information to the community on matters of public interest.
HMC is dedicated to making the Hamline Midway neighborhood of Saint Paul a great place to live, learn, work, and play. Our service area is bounded by University Avenue on the south, Pierce Butler Route on the north, Transfer Road on the west, and Lexington Parkway on the east.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Environmental Initiatives Program Management and Coordination (50%)
Lead the development of HMC’s community air monitoring program
Coordinate 30 community air monitoring project sensor sites in the Hamline Midway and Frogtown neighborhoods, ensuring data collection and reporting processes are maintained.
Lead coordination for community air monitoring public events, including planning, logistics, and promotion.
Serve as the primary point of contact for the HMEC community tree allocation and tree removal programs, including application management and distribution logistics.
Convene regular meetings with the grant team, including external partners Frogtown Neighborhood Association, Just Air, Mankato State University and OSLUV.
Track progress and outcomes for HMEC initiatives, providing regular updates to the team and community stakeholders (ie. the Brass Foundry group)
Community Organizing (30%)
Engage residents in environmental issues through door-to-door outreach, flyering, and digital campaigns.
Facilitate HMEC committee meetings and other in-person public events to educate and activate neighbors on environmental topics.
Identify and build relationships with historically underrepresented communities in the Hamline Midway area to promote equitable engagement.
Recruit and train volunteers to support HMEC projects and events.
Communications and Outreach (20%)
Manage social media channels, mailing lists, newsletters, and other communications platforms to keep the community informed and engaged.
Draft and distribute flyers, articles, and other promotional materials for events and initiatives.
Serve as a liaison between HMEC and local organizations, maintaining collaborative relationships and sharing resources.
Respond to inquiries from community members about HMEC projects and general environmental topics.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Proven ability to manage and coordinate complex projects with multiple stakeholders.
Demonstrated commitment to intercultural communication and inclusivity in community engagement.
Experience leading community organizing efforts and working directly with diverse populations.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience in outreach and marketing.
Proficiency with G-Suite, Microsoft Office, and social media platforms. Graphic design or email marketing experience is a plus.
Knowledge of environmental sustainability practices, urban forestry, or related fields is strongly preferred.
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Fluency in a language other than English (such as Karen, Spanish, Somali, Oromo, or Amharic) is a plus.
At least 2-3 years of relevant experience in project management, community engagement, or a related field.
