Hamline Midway Coalition (HMC)
HMC is an action-oriented, neighborhood-based community engagement organization serving the vibrant Midway area of Saint Paul. Bounded by University Avenue on the south, Pierce Butler Route on the north, Transfer Road on the west, and Lexington Parkway on the east, HMC (District Council 11) is one of 17 District Councils that serve the neighborhoods of St. Paul, MN.
HMC supports resident-led initiatives in community building, transportation systems, public space placemaking, economic vitality, and neighborhood identity. We coordinate community participation in public policy decision-making and provide high-quality information to the public on matters of local interest. HMC is dedicated to making our neighborhood a great place to live, learn, work, and play.
Position Overview
HMC is seeking an organized, outgoing, and professional individual to support programs, events, and outreach in the Midway area of Saint Paul. The Community Organizer will engage the Hamline Midway community in local issues and initiatives by providing communication, technical assistance, and accessible structures for community advocacy.
- Supervisor: Lisa Nelson, Executive Director, Hamline Midway Coalition
- Position Type: Part-time, hourly (20 hours/week). Highly flexible schedule including required evenings and weekends for meetings and events. Hybrid/remote work is possible for many tasks.
- Compensation: $20 – $28 per hour (equivalent to $20,800 – $29,120 annually), depending on qualifications and experience.
- Benefits: Generous PTO and holidays and eligible for 401k with 1% HMC match.
- Location: 1600 University Ave W. Ste 301, St. Paul. Work also requires travel within the neighborhood.
- Start Date: August 2026 (start date flexible)
Responsibilities
Committee Support
- Provide dedicated staff support for HMC committees (e.g., Environment Committee, Transportation Committee).
- Must be available to attend scheduled committee meetings on weekday evenings.
Community Engagement & Outreach
- Maintain active relationships with local organizations, cultural groups, and local government stakeholders.
- Help to recruit, train, and retain volunteers, committee members, and future board members.
- Assist in building and maintaining strong relationships with the Midway business community and local entrepreneurs.
Communications
- Assist in managing HMC’s digital footprint, including the website, e-newsletters, and social media platforms.
- Provide clear, accessible information to the public regarding neighborhood updates and city governance issues.
Events
- Help to plan, coordinate, and execute community events and neighborhood outreach campaigns from setup to takedown.
- Must be available to staff community events on evenings and weekends as scheduled.
Other
- Other duties as assigned, and depending on skills and interests.
Required Qualifications
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Prior relevant experience in neighborhood-based advocacy, organizing, urban planning, or nonprofits.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate weekday evening meetings and weekend events.
- Experience or interest in working in diverse communities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Language skills in addition to English a huge plus! (particularly Spanish, Amharic, Oromo, Somali, Karen, or Hmong)
- Proficiency in communication technology, websites, databases, and design platforms.
- Ability to manage and coordinate complex projects with multiple stakeholders.
- Experience leading community organizing efforts and working directly with diverse populations.
